Afternoon Sailing Program

In addition to our morning Junior Program of sailing, swimming and tennis classes on Monday through Thursday from 9:00 – 1:30 pm, we also offer the following specialized afternoon sailing activities:

Opti Skills Clinic offers beginning sailors an opportunity to hone their sailing fundamentals with a little extra instruction one afternoon/week. Parents of Opti Skills Clinic sailors should be committed to helping their child improve by encouraging participation in weekend races. Opti Skills Clinic is a stepping stone for kids interested in joining the racing teams and a wonderful opportunity to get more comfortable with recreational sailing. Sign up online, but please note that a coach will evaluate and make final determination if this clinic is appropriate for your child.

REGISTRATION: You may register for Opti Skills Clinic online, as an add-on to your week(s) of morning classes. It takes place Wednesday from 1:30 – 4:00 pm. The cost is $30 per day.

This program is for NLGYC Opti sailors who have solid fundamental sailing skills and have consistently participated in weekend races. The focus of Opti Race Team is to develop and hone racing skills and strategies. The Opti Race Team is expected to participate in afternoon practices, weekend races, and inter-club regattas. Moving from Opti Skills Clinic to Opti Race Team is considered to be a major accomplishment and requires coach approval. Opti Race Team sailors must be at least 8 years old and sign up for either a 4 week session of a 7 week session. Opti ownership is recommended but not required. A limited number of club boats will be available with coach approval for a rental fee.

REGISTRATION: You may register for Opti Race Team online. It is available as a 4 week session for $215, and a 6 week session for $380. It takes place Tuesday and Thursday from 1:30 – 4:00 pm.

Advanced Sailing at NLGYC is instructed by a professional racing coach and offers advanced racing instruction in double-handed sailing to experienced NLGYC sailors 13 – 25 years old. Participants will develop their racing knowledge with a skills based curriculum, collegiate-style on water practices, and video footage debriefs. The program will also include regattas, other off-lake racing experiences, and sailing in varied class boats. Participation in practices and weekend racing is required. Participants must sign up for at least half season for team continuity. Exceptions to the above requirements will be considered on a case by case basis by the Advanced Sailing coach.

REGISTRATION: You may register for Advanced Sailing online. It is available as a 4 week session for $315, and a 6 week session for $575. It takes place Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 1:30 – 4:30 pm.

Please note: Any loss or damage to NLGYC boats or equipment in clinics, team activities or regattas, other than normal wear, should be reported to the program director, and shall be the responsibility of the sailor and his/her parents.
