2011 Sail Teams
Sail Team had another terrific season filled with lots of success, fun, competition and team spirit. This is thanks in large part to our wonderful coach Donna Wotton. Congratulations to all, sailors and coaches alike! Also, thanks to everyone who helped out with the regattas, whether driving, housing sailors, helping to feed the masses, etc. Your efforts are always greatly appreciated!
2011 JUNIOR SAIL TEAM
Junior Sail Team meets on Mondays and Tuesdays from 1:30 to 4:30 and is open to sailors from ages 10 to 14 with solid basic sailing skills. The purpose of the Junior Sail Team is to help sailors make the transition from recreational sailing to racing. The goals are to foster sportsmanship and the love of sailing, to improve sailing skills and teach basic racing rules and techniques. Instruction for beginning racers will be in Optimists while more experienced members of the Junior Sail Team will be introduced to two-handed sailing in N10s and Flying Juniors. A three-week minimum commitment is required for enrollment in Junior Sail Team. Every effort will be made to allow Junior Sail Team members to participate in at least one regatta if the child is interested in competing.
Junior Sail Team members are expected to race at least one day per weekend. Because Junior Sail Team involves our youngest sailors, it requires parent involvement to ensure safety. Safety is a primary concern of NLGYC, however it is the parents, not the Junior Sail Team instructors that have responsibility for sailors on the weekends. Parents should expect to assist their child in weekend rigging, de-rigging and the launch and docking process. To ensure the safety of each of our young sailors on the race course, it is required that each sailor have his or her own individual patrol boat (organized by the parent) following them on the race course until the head sailing instructor deems this unnecessary. Club boats are available for weekend rental by club members- see the Club Manager for appropriate forms.
2011 SENIOR SAIL TEAM
NLGYC’s Senior Sail Team, open to sailors ages 15 – 18 years old who have the necessary basic racing skills, as determined by the coaches. Senior Sail Team sailors are required to race regularly on weekends and it is expected that they will “qualify” in the fleet of their choosing. Practices for Senior Sail Team are from 1:30 to 4:30 on Wednesdays and Thursdays. The purpose of Senior Sail Team is to hone racing skills, encourage sportsmanship and foster a lifelong love of sailboat racing. A three-week minimum commitment is required for enrollment in Senior Sail Team.
Both home and away regattas are a highlight of the summer for every racer on Senior Sail Team. Every effort will be made to allow sailors to participate in at least one regatta with priority given on the basis of participation, sailing skills, sportsmanship, and number of years on Senior Sail Team. Parental participation is crucial to the success of all regattas and parents of Senior Sail Team members will be expected to volunteer a number of different duties during the course of the racing season.
Sailors on both Junior and Senior Sail Team will be expected to bring the following items to practices:
- All personal boat gear and sails (if using personally owned boat)
- Coast Guard approved PFD of proper size
- Sailing gloves (optional but highly recommended)
- Sailing shoes
- Sunscreen/Hat/Sunglasses
- Stopwatch or watch with a second hand
- Foul weather gear in the case of rain
