Northern Lake George
Yacht Club to Host |

Hague, NY, September 1, 1998 - The Northern Lake George Yacht Club (NLGYC) in Hague, NY on the Northern end of Lake George has been selected by the International Star Class to host the 1998 North American Championship Regatta on September 27 - October 1, 1998. The Star Class is the largest class of boats sailed in the Olympics and enjoys a huge class membership throughout all the great sailing cities in the world. This event is one of the most prestigious sailing regattas in North America. The regatta draws some of the most well-known sailors in the United States and Canada. "Our small club is thrilled at the prospect of hosting a world class regatta of this caliber. It has been many years since the Star Class North Americans has been held on a lake in the North East and we hope that the local community and regional sailing community will take advantage of the opportunity to share the excitement of sailboat racing at this level," said Bruce Hatfield, Regatta Chairperson. This will be the 48th Annual Star North American regatta. It began in 1939, and with the exception of a couple of breaks in the late '30's and 40's, has been held yearly since 1952. The list of previous winners reads like the who's who of American sailing: Ogilvy, Bob and Howard Lippincott (influential boat manufacturers on the east coast until 1980's), Lowell North (founder of North Sails, largest sail maker in the world), Skip Etchells (the Etchells class is named after him), Tom Blackaller (the famed America's Cupper from the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco), Bill Schoonmaker (Olympic medalist in several classes), Richard Stearns (of the life jacket and clothing line), Dennis Conner (brought the America's Cup home from Australia), Paul Cayard (from theSt. Francis club also and just won the Whitbread Around-the-World race in May 98), and Mark Reynolds (winner of gold and silver medals for the US in Star Class '92 and '88, and top finisher in '96. This year NLGYC will host approximately 60 Star boats. All of the top skippers including Reynolds, Brun, Doyle, MacCausland, and others known more prominently in the Star Class will be racing. Northern Lake George has been selected to host the event because of the beautiful pristine deep water lake, excellent wind, and renowned hospitality the club has to offer. The almost- all-volunteer club has a 54 year history of great sailing, excellent summer junior program (one of the most vital on the east coast), and strong family community. The event is underwritten by Noblia Watches, a division of Citizen Watches, in conjunction with the Star Class. Other sponsors include Nautica International, Inc., Gothic Business Centers, Otter Creek Brewery, Saratoga Springs Water Company, Sobstad Sails, North Sails, MacCausland Company, Chic's Marina and Trimble Navigation.
