Northern Lake George Yacht ClubNLGYC Junior Program

The NLGYC Junior Program seeks to provide a safe, constructive, and enjoyable family oriented environment for the youth of our club. Our objectives are to develop life-long skills in sailing, swimming and tennis; to foster sportsmanship, and racing skills; to continue the heritage of the NLGYC community; to nurture an appreciation and respect for the lake; and to encourage lifelong friendships.

REGISTRATION INSTRUCTIONS
Please consult the Fall 07 and Spring 08 Bulletins for detailed instructions for the 2008 Junior Program season.  Once again,
Non-member applications will not be accepted (friends and guests are considered non-members); and no one week applications will be accepted.

Pre-registration
All NLGYC active* members may pre-register their children/grandchildren who will be attending for a minimum of two weeks. Class limits are set at 15 kids per group and we anticipate several groups maxing out again this summer. In order to guarantee a spot, members must take advantage of pre-registration privileges by following the instructions below.

1.  Fill out and mail completed forms (enclosed in your club DUES mailing or found online) by March 1st
2.  Bill to follow as confirmation.
3.  Payment due by June 1, 2008.

*Active membership categories include full season with or without facilities and short season (Junior Program enrollment privileges will be limited to those two weeks of membership).

Regarding fees: Please refer to the NLGYC Bulletin for details.

Further registration questions may be directed to Diane Rottier, gtmoct@sbcglobal.net

Junior Program Information
Class size for each group is limited to 15 children. Class hours are 9:00am-1:30pm.

Each child should bring: a swimsuit and towel; tennis racquet and sneakers (non-marking); sunscreen; lunch with a drink; extra clothing for cool or rainy days; rain gear (we sail in the rain!); Coast Guard approved life jacket; a second pair of shoes that can get wet; and a bag to transport belongings. Please label all items.

Please check lost and found for missing items.

Rainy Day Policy: If it rains more than one day, the Junior Program Director has the option to call a "shortened day" as long as all parents were notified by 9am.

The Junior Program has a safety program registered with the NY Department of Health. Anyone wishing to read it should contact the Junior Program Director.

Group Assignment is a delicate balance between social maturity and sporting skill levels. Ultimately, we try to place a child where he/she will have the most fun and will learn the most. It is usually better to place a child in a lower group where he/she can excel than in a higher group where he/she may feel overly challenged. After a few classes, the staff may recommend moving a child based on their assessment of skill and maturity level.

Polliwog:   3 1/2 year to entering Kindergarten

Group 1:    entering  1st to 3rd grade

Group 2:    entering   4th and 5th

Group 3:    entering   6th and 7th

Group 4:    entering   8th and above

Tadpoles include children younger than 3.5 years, which meet once a week as a "mom and me group" for lunch, games, songs, and a swim, run by the moms.

Medical Forms:
By now, it seems that most everyone is aware of the requirements for the medical immunizations. Please continue to have the immunization records for each child available at registration. For those who may not be aware, Medical forms must be filled out completely and handed in at registration. You must have a separate medical form for each child. The form is included with your Club DUES mailing or online; please make photocopies as needed. Please note that the state of NY requires documentation of all dates of all immunizations administered. You may obtain this information from your child's doctor.

Also, note that the medical form asks for insurance information as well as doctor and dentist phone numbers. These numbers are important in case there is a medical emergency and the attending MD may need to get information on child's past history in order to provide accurate treatment and diagnoses.

2007 SAIL TEAM
NLGYC’s junior race team – Sail Team – is open to club sailors 13 – 18 years old who have the necessary basic racing skills, as determined by the coaches, and must race regularly on weekends. Training will occur in Flying Juniors. Practices are Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Each member usually participates in one or two regattas during the summer (dates listed on the enclosed calendar). Registration letters will be sent next month to all eligible club members. If you do not receive a letter and want to join the team, please contact Abby Reingold.

2007 SAIL CLINIC
This introductory racing clinic using Optimists practices on Wednesdays from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. To join the clinic, junior sailors must be age 10 – 12, must have solid basic sailing skills, and must agree to regularly race one day each weekend. Registration for Sail Clinic takes place on-site during Junior Program Registration or you can contact Abby Reingold. Updated Sail Clinic Guidelines will be available at registration. Members may use their privately owned Optimist but parents must fill out and sign the Private Optimist Usage Form at registration or it can be obtained from the Junior Program Director once the program starts.

2007

"Another outstanding season," reports club manager Amanda Vickerson.  Participation in Junior Program was at all-time record high, with "about a billion and a half kid-weeks recorded."

Classes began on July 2th and ended on Thursday, August 16th.
The gymkhana took place the 17th of August, and early reports indicate that the match ended in a draw.

The junior programmers continued their undefeated string (56-0) once again sinking the staff.
